Tsuchiya KOITSIU was born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. At the age
of 15, he came to Tokyo to become a disciple of a woodblock engraver Matsuzaki. As Matsuzaki worked for Kobayashi Kiyochika,
Koitsu became his disciple and lived together with the family of Kiyochika for
19 years. His artist name OITSUwas given to him by his master Kiyochika. On the occasion
of the Exhibition held in memory of the 17th Anniversary of the Death of Kiyochika, Koitsu became acquainted with Shozaburo
WATANABE and produced many woodblock prints of different landscapes in
Japan, carrying on the Kiyochika tradition.
