室町時代に実在したとされている遊女・地獄太夫と、同じく室町時代の僧侶・一休禅師(一休宗純)が描かれています。
実際に地獄太夫と一休禅師は交流があったとされていますが、二人の物語が伝説として広く知られたのは江戸時代からであり、一休禅師の説話集や洒落本などが流布したことが契機とされています。

It depicts Jigokutayu, a prostitute who is said to have existed in the Muromachi period (1336-1573), and Zen Master Ikkyu (Soujun Ikkyu), a monk also from the Muromachi period (1336-1573).
It is said that Jigokutayu and Zenji Ikkyu actually interacted with each other, but it was not until the Edo period (1603-1868) that the story of the two became widely known as a legend, and it is believed that this was triggered by the circulation of a collection of stories and pun books about Zen Master Ikkyu.
