牝小路焼とは、寛永9年(1632年)に豊前から転封された細川忠利が陶工の牝小路家初代源七、葛城家初代八左衛門を従え、藩主の命によって焼き物を焼かせたのが始まり。
牝小路焼は、鉄分の多い粘土を使った素朴で力強い作風が特徴です。釉薬の調合割合、焼成温度の変化等によりさまざまな発色技法が使い分けられ、釉薬の深い美しさと自由奔放な流し掛けの模様は、器形と調和して素朴な中にもダイナミックな味わいがあります。
