Author's biography

Sentaro Iwata (1901-1974)
Born in Tokyo.
Studied under Kikuchi Kigetsu and Ito Shinsui, and produced many illustrations for serialized novels, as well as many magazine and book covers in the "Sentaro-bari" style of painting.
He is also known as the first president and chairman of the Japan Federation of Publication Artists, and was awarded the 2nd Kikuchi Prize and the Medal with Purple Ribbon, making him one of the leading illustrators of the Showa period.
All of his paintings of beautiful women are lustrous and have a unique beauty, which, according to the artist, is caused by the imbalance between the spirit and the body of the person depicted.
He said that beauty arises from the imbalance and distortion caused by the various mental movements of the painted figures, such as loneliness, wistfulness, joy, and pride.
