月岡芳年の月百姿シリーズの一枚です。

金時山とは、神奈川県と静岡県の県境にある箱根山北西部に位置する山のことを指し、さらに、金時山の北側一帯は足柄山と呼ばれています。
江戸時代において、頼光四天王の一人・坂田金時が足柄山の出身であるとした『金太郎伝説』が流布し、この頃より箱根山北西部が金時山と呼ばれるようになったとされています。
その後も1900年(明治33年)には、童謡『金太郎』が制作され、金太郎の物語はさらに広く知られるようになりました。

本作品もそうした『金太郎伝説』や童謡『金太郎』に基づいて描かれた一場面であるとされています。

Kintoki is located in the northwestern part of Mt. Hakone, on the border between Kanagawa and Shizuoka Prefectures, and the northern part of Mt.
During the Edo period (1603-1868), the “Kintaro Legend” circulated that Kintoki Sakata, one of Raikou's Four Heavenly Kings, was from Ashigara-yama, and from this time on, the northwestern part of Mt. Hakone came to be called Kintoki-yama.
In 1900, a children's song “Kintaro” was produced, and the story of Kintaro became even more widely known.

This work is said to be a scene based on the “Kintaro Legend” and the children's song “Kintaro.
