月岡芳年の月百姿シリーズの一枚です。

描かれているのは、滋賀県に位置する石山寺にて琵琶湖に浮かぶ月影を眺めながら『源氏物語』の構想を練る紫式部です。
実際に石山寺には、紫式部が石山寺にて参籠中に『源氏物語』を起筆したという伝説が残されています。

The painting depicts Murasaki Shikibu contemplating the plot of “The Tale of Genji” while gazing at the moonlight over Lake Biwa at Ishiyama-ji Temple in Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
Legend has it that Murasaki Shikibu actually wrote “The Tale of Genji” while she was a monk at Ishiyama-dera Temple.
