This painting is one of Yoshitoshi Tsukioka “A Hundred Figures of the Moon” series.
Kagekado is said to have played an active role in the Genpei wars of the late Heian period (794-1185) and appears in works such as “Tale of the Heike” and “Azuma Kagami”.
Minamoto no Yoritomo's first battle in his campaign to overthrow the Heike was an attack on the mansion of the shogun Kanetaka Hachimaki in Izu Province.
In this battle, Kagekado defeated Kanetaka, the lord of Hachimaki- mansion(Yamaki-mansion), and achieved great military success.
The two men depicted in the work are Kagekado and Kanetaka.
The shadow behind the shoji (paper sliding door) with sword at the ready is Kanetaka, while Kagekado takes off his armor and hangs a small long sword on the tip of it to lure Kanetaka, who is waiting for him.
