月岡芳年の月百姿シリーズの一枚です。

明石儀太夫は明智光秀の家臣であり、光秀と共に、天下取りになる前の秀吉を襲った家臣の一人でもあります。
本能寺の変での信長の死を知り、戦から引き返してきた秀吉を襲撃するという計画でしたが、失敗に終わり、この襲撃事件では多くの光秀の重要な家臣たちが討たれました。

こちらの作品では、計画が失敗に終わるなか辞世の句を詠み、自刃しようとする明石儀太夫を描いています。
後ろの衝立には虎が描かれています。虎は、月に向かって咆哮する生き物です。
今まさに月下で辞世の句を詠み、自ら命を絶とうとしている明石儀太夫と、月に向かって咆哮する虎とをかけて構成された作品です。


This painting is one of Yoshitoshi Tsukioka “A Hundred Figures of the Moon” series.

Gidayu Akashi was a vassal of Mitsuhide Akechi and was one of the vassals who, along with Mitsuhide, attacked Hideyoshi before he took over.
The plan to attack Hideyoshi, who had turned back from battle after learning of Nobunaga's death in the Honnoji Incident, failed, and many of Mitsuhide's important vassals were killed in the attack.

This work depicts Gidayu Akashi, who took responsibility for the failure of the plan and attempted to commit suicide.
A tiger is depicted on the impulse behind him.
The tiger is a creature that roars at the moon.
This work is composed by overlapping Gidayu Akashi, who is about to compose a poem of resignation and take his own life under the moon, and the tiger roaring at the moon.
