月岡芳年の月百姿シリーズの一枚です。
少将義孝とは、平安時代後期の公家であり、歌人です。
兄の挙賢(たかかた)は先少将(さきのしょうしょう)、弟の義孝は後少将(のちのしょうしょう)と呼ばれおり、その後、二人は病により一晩のうちに若くして亡くなってしまいました。
若く、そして美しい二人の兄弟は宮中の人々に大変愛された存在でした。

This painting is one of Yoshitoshi Tsukioka “A Hundred Figures of the Moon” series.
Shosho Yoshitaka was a courtier and poet of the late Heian period.
His elder brother Takakata was called Saki-no-Shosho(former rear admiral),and his younger brother Yoshitaka was called Nochi-no-Shosho(later rear admiral).
Later, they both died young from illness overnight.
The two beautiful young brothers were beloved by the people of the palace.
